Abstract

Purpose : to investigate the relationship between self efficacy, autonomy and professional self conception among
nurses working in intensive care units.
Method: Data were obtained by self -reported questionnaires from 190 nurses working in intensive care units at K, B, and D university hospitals in B metropolitan city, from June 1 to June 30, 2011. And data were analyzed using SPSS/PC WIN 18.0program. For the statistical analysis of the date, frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe s test and Pearson s correlation coefficients were used.
Result: The mean scores of the self efficacy, autonomy and professional self conception of the subjects were 77.35±10.56(range of scale: 24-120), 33.27 ±5.30(range of scale:11-55), 69.12 ±6.96(range of scale: 23-92), respectively. There were significant differences with the score of professional self conception by the age(F=3.778, p=.006), marital status(t=-2.086, p=.038) academic background(F=11.385, p<.001), job position(t=-4.167, p<.001), type of shift(t=-2.949, p=.004), annual income(F=3.339, p=.021), the prospected length of employment in nursing (F=21.259, p<.001) and satisfaction level in nursing(F=26.441, p<.001). The correlation between self efficacy and autonomy showed moderate positive correlation (r=.506, p< .001). The correlation between self efficacy and professional self conception was strong positive correlation(r=.767, p<.001), and also showed moderate positive correlation between autonomy and professional self conception (r=.562, p<.001).
Conclusion: For the increasement of the health promotion behavior, it is needed to improve body image and self-esteem in mastectomy patients. And, It is needed to encourage to participate with self help group program in mastectomy patients. Therefore, For the increasement of the professional self conception, it is needed to improve self efficacy and autonomy among nurses working in intensive care units.
